The City and County of Broomfield was concerned that some of its residents may not know where to obtain needed services, so it set out to change that. When Broomfield congregations of the Boulder Colorado Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints asked how they could help their community for Colorado Cares Day 2004, they received the assignment to deliver packets of materials to selected neighborhoods.

About 45 volunteers gathered on Aug. 31, 2004, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1250 North Main Street, Broomfield, a church building in the Stake. They took stacks of pamphlets and fliers and divided them into numerous packets. Then, the volunteers walked through their assigned neighborhoods delivering information the residents were likely to need but may not know where to obtain it. The group worked for a total of 60 volunteer hours.

Colorado Cares Day is a statewide day of service sponsored by the Governor’s Commission on Community Service in honor of Colorado’s statehood on Aug., 1, 1876. Colorado Cares Day is an opportunity to help strengthen local communities through service projects.

Erica Smith, David Smith, Jared Petersen, Jason Aldridge, Bruce Aldridge, Patrick Lovato, and Mark Pope were among the volunteers who grasped the vision of serving their community. And, Pope’s daughters, Ella and Avery enjoyed the time with their father as they sung at the top of their lungs while he pushed them in a stroller on his route.
