Making lunches for Colorado flood relief volunteers

Sisters in the Relief Society, the women’s organization, and Primary children in the Boulder Colorado Stake teamed up to make lunches for the Stake’s Mormon Helping Hands providing free labor in flood relief efforts. The sisters made 164 peanut butter sandwiches in the morning on Fri., Sept. 28, 2013. Primary children in Broomfield, Colo., served that afternoon by adding those sandwiches to other items and putting them into lunch bags. They thanked the volunteers with pictures and notes on the bags. Continue reading

Protecting neighbors and environment after Colorado flood

Kendra Kaiser watched over a dumpster and neighbors in Boulder County in October after September’s torrential flooding killed nine people, damaged or destroyed 2,000 homes and damaged 30 bridges and hundreds of miles of highway in 24 counties.

Kaiser explained she listened to “folks with heavy burdens” tell their stories that were “unique, amazing and terribly devastating.” She also lifted spirits.

Kaiser offered a single mother free labor to help with her flood recovery. The mother said, “Are you kidding me? Are you serious?”

Kaiser said, “I thought she was going to cry. I almost cried, too.”

Kaiser was one of many Mormon Helping Hands of the Boulder Colorado Stake (like a diocese) and neighboring stakes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints monitoring dumpsters for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Boulder County from Sept. 20 through Oct. 6, 2013. While the main purpose of the project, nicknamed “dumpster babysitting,” was to protect residents and the environment from hazardous waste, listening to neighbors and offering free flood recovery labor was helpful.
